So Blu - 26.11.2008

Having heard about her demo through word of mouth, it was no less that L.A. Reid (the LA in LaFace Records) who picked up the phone and called Blu Cantrell. Her voice seemed to satisfy that yearning in my soul, not only for a great singer but for a great sound that I felt was missing in todays music, L.A. says. Blu is that soul, Blu is that sound. Blu is that music. And few recommendations come higher than that. Blu s debut album, So Blu, works as a personal diary of thoughts of revelations, couched in a style that recalls maybe Sade, Lina and even Lady Day herself with production from Jam and Lewis, Dallas Austin and more. What more could you need? The set includes the US hit Hit Em Up Style.

Bittersweet - 28-07-2003

Having been discovered by none other than LA Reid, it was Blu's debut single 'Hit Em Up Style' that started the tongues wagging. The album that followed, 'So Blu', did much to cement her reputation as a new R'n'B talent. Follow that up with second set 'Bittersweet' and it seems that Blu Cantrell is here to stay. The new album features the elementally catchy 'Breathe', as voiced with Sean Paul, and is just the right kind of urban block-party-in-a-box that looks at life's emotions through a positive viewpoint. Says Blu: 'through my music, I bring a sense of light to dark subjects, especially in relationships...I wanted to give you real emotions with a sense of fun. I hope the fans enjoy the aural experience as much as I enjoyed creating it.'

Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!) - 17-09-2001 [USA Version]

There's both a retro Cotton Club vibe and a postfeminist lesson (if your man is straying, get to Neiman Marcus and max out his credit line!) on R&B singer Cantrell's debut single. And that's what makes this witty Dallas Austin-penned and -produced revenge anthem so catchy and compelling: the contrasts. Vintage-sounding horns rub up against modern hip-pop, and Cantrell's roller-coastering vocals and get-his-cash toughness are feisty counterpoints to her soulful keening over love's betrayal.

Breathe [Remix] - 28-07-2003

Last seen in the UK charts with her firing urban debut 'Hit 'Em Up Style', Blu Cantrell returns this week with another brilliant single, this time in the shape of 'Breathe'. Featuring a guest vocal from untouchable dancehall star Sean Paul, this is a laidback and catchy mix of r'n'b and ragga that has summertime written all over it, whilst the mixes add a little variety for the dancefloor.

Make Me Wanna Scream - 01-12-2003

Blu Cantrell teams up with Ian Lewis from Inner Circle for the lovers quarrel song 'Make Me Wanna Scream' which is the second single to be taken from the superb album 'Bittersweet'. Blu carries the light reggae tinged sound well with her dynamic and unique delivery on the high-energy track.
